PHOTOGRAPHY

My father gifted me his weathered Nikon FM2 when I left home in 1987 to pursue a BA in History at the University of Colorado. As a wide-eyed, warm-hearted country girl from Indiana, I had no idea that my passionate foray into photography in Boulder would eventually open doors far beyond the Rocky Mountains. Though I went on to earn a Master’s in History and International Relations in Switzerland in 1992, it was my six months of thesis research in Sri Lanka immersed in a conflict zone documenting International Humanitarian Action that unveiled the bureaucratic entanglements and inefficiencies plaguing humanitarian work.

It was this disillusionment that led me in another direction to pursue a career in photojournalism, a field where I could document history as it unfolded and be my decisive, honest self—bearing witness to world events and cultures for others to see. These traits—my fierce courage, insatiable curiosity, and boundless compassion—are woven into my work, reflected in images that are unfiltered, heartfelt, and full of spirit.

Over my 17-year career in photojournalism (1993-2010), I crisscrossed the globe, with my work featured in notable publications. Today, my lens is focused on the delicate beauty of water, air, and earth—capturing their interplay with light while also creating unique environmental portraits that speak to the heart of the human experience.
